Keiran & Caroline 1st August 2015

As anyone who has worked with me will know one of my favourite subjects to photograph at a wedding is a bride with her bridesmaids. Bridesmaids in mini-skirts or long dresses, high heels or bare feet, renaissance curls or rock n roll quiffs they always look amazing and seeing a bride with her girls on her wedding day is a wonderful, empowering moment. Of course bridesmaids with attitude are even better and these ladies had both qualities in spades.

Arriving at Keiran and Caroline’s house a little past midday I walked into a room of six stunning women in floor length slip dresses with flowers in their freshly curled hair all busy with the necessary preparations of a wedding day in the making. None more so of course than the bride herself; Caroline who, like many brides, expressed a great deal of trepidation in regard to being photographed and yet had all the natural poise and grace of a 1920’s Hollywood starlet. I am very happy to say she made my job that day both easy and fun.

During the short walk to St Edwards Church Caroline and I had a chance to chat and I was once again surprised by her incredibly laid back attitude towards the day despite the very apparent amount of effort she had put into the finer details. DIY wedding culture is fast becoming quite commonplace but the very fact that it means all details are managed by the couple themselves of course makes it unique every time and all the more exciting to photograph. As Caroline talked me through her bouquet remarking ‘these are from ASDA, the are from Costco’ pointing out what I had presumed was part of a range of professionally designed floral arrangements, I realised how naturally this type of boho, vintage aesthetic came to her.

After the ceremony guests walked a short distance to Windsor and Eton Riverside where the gorgeous steam boat ‘The Southern Comfort’ awaited them courtesy of The Maidenhead Steam Navigation Company. The weather held out for a gentle cruise down the river Thames, stopping only briefly at Boulter’s lock. We docked at Weir Bank, Riverside Marquee to the sound of traditional Indian drummers who continued to beat a exhilarating rhythm as Keiran and Caroline disembarked the boat on to a red carpet, flanked by friends and family, forming an impressive confetti tunnel.

A few canapés and some champagne later and I seized the opportunity to photograph the couple alone on board their stunning show-boat. Another favourite part of any wedding day for me, as a photographer, is the short time I get to spend focusing solely on the couple on their special day. Everyone wants to look their best for their partner, friends and family and after so much time and effort goes into the finer details it is always deeply satisfying as a photographer to take the time to capture this as a memory forever both aesthetically and emotionally. Caroline was a delight to photograph as expected and despite her nerves exuded beauty in any setting as Keiran graciously let her take the spotlight. However his pride was clear to see both on and off camera and together they made a beautiful elegant couple both in manner and on film (or digital file!).

The day concluded with the traditional speeches, cake cutting (also made by the multi-talented bride!) and a magical first dance to ‘Playground Love’ by Air, in which guests gathered to watch as the newly-weds slow dance among the starlight cast by a mirrored glitterball.

Photographing Keiran and Caroline’s vintage-esque, boho style wedding was a visual delight and I was blown away by the attention to detail from bridesmaids dresses in complimenting shades of blue and pink to the matching cake tiers and beautiful flowers delicately entwined with fairy lights and hanging tea light jars.
